Adonirum Judson Abernethy
Farmer Arkansas/Oklahoma AR/OK
Adonirum Judson Abernethy was born on March 26, 1875 in Thornton, Calhoun County, Arkansas, the son of John Ware Abernathy (1848–1929) and Sarah Ann Talbot (1843–1882). Sarah was the sister of Adoniram Judson Talbot (see entry 1855-1935). Adonirum “did not like his name for which I don’t blame him. He used to say when a little boy, ‘I don’t like ol’ Judoriram. I think Willie is a heap prettier name than ol’ Judoriram!’ He has always been called Jud.”[1]
Adonirum married Dora Alice Tice in Howell County, Missouri. They had 3 daughters and a son. These census reports reveal the phonetic spelling of Adoniram and the various names used by Mr. Abernethy through 5 decades of surveys:
- In 1900, Judson (age 25), was a farmer and was the married head of a household in Duke, Oklahoma.
- In the 1910 census Adoniram (age 35) was recorded in Hollis, Harmon, Oklahoma. Adonirum registered for the draft for World War I.
- In the 1920 census Jud (age 45) was recorded in Harmon, Oklahoma.
- In the 1930 census Abonnam (age 55) was recorded in Hollis, Oklahoma.
- In the 1940 census Adoniran (age 65) was recorded in Hollis, Oklahoma.
- In the 1950 census A (age 75) was recorded in Hollis Township, Harmon County, Oklahoma.
Adonirum died on December 28, 1967, in Hollis, Harmon, aged 92. He was buried in Fairmount Cemetery.[2]
