Adoniram Judson Ellzey

The story of Dr. Adoniram Judson Ellzey is a story of spellings and misspellings and confusing calculations. As an exercise in phonetical spelling I will try to list all the variations found in census records from which I drew this material. Dr. Ellzey was born 12 July 1852 in Pontotoc, Mississippi, as the son of Dr. James Ellzey and Martha Stephens Ellzey. He was number 9 of 11 children. Number eight also inherited the Judson legacy when she received the name of Sarah Boardman Ellzey in honor of the missionary’s second wife. The physician died at age 83 on 02 May 1936 and is buried in San Antonio, Texas.
The 1860 census reports him to be 8 years old, white, and living in Pontotoc, MS. In 1880 he is an unmarried physician, age 27, and living in Maysfield in Milam County, Texas. In 1881 he married Georgia Tennessee Tyson Elzy (sic) and by the 1900 census he had 8 children at home in Milan County, TX. Those children are listed here as they are reported in that census: Bernard D. Elzy (17), Georgia H. Elzy (15), Adonaram J. Elzy (13), Berry R. Elzy (11), Francis W. Elzy (9), Crawfell B. Elzy (5), Carrol V. Elzy (6), Eric RM Elzy (2). Ten years later the family lived in Armstrong, Texas (Bell County or Kenedy County?), and the head of the household is spelled Adonaram. The at-home children are Berry, Travis, Mary, Erick, Carrol, Barnard, Willard and Burdette. This turn-of-the-century census reports that Dr. Ellzey is a physician who has been unemployed for 4 months in the past year. He owns his own house and farm and is literate in English. [1]
