(Adoniron) Adoniram Judson Bates

When Adoniram (also spelled Adoniron) Judson Bates was born on 15 November 1819, in Cummington, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, his father, Nehemiah Bates, was 25 and his mother, Electa Jewell, was 24. He was the first of four children. He married Mary Mandana Jayne in 1851. They were the parents of at least 1 daughter, Electa Bates who was born in 1853, the same year her mother died.
On 29 December 1857 Adoniram Judson Bates married Lucy Ann Howard (1837-1920) in Rockford, Illinois. They had two children: Elmer Elsworth Bates (1867-1901) and Ada Bates (1869-1915). The 1860 census lists Adoniram as a farmer with real estate property valued at $2550, a wife named Lucy who was 23 and a 9 (probably 7) year old daughter named Electra. Adoniram Judson Bates died on 7 January 1901, in Durand, Winnebago County, Illinois, at the age of 81, and was buried in Howard Union Cemetery, near Durand, Illinois.[i] His grave marker identifies him as a veteran of the Civil War.
