The
Judson Legacy
Project
This website collects and displays information on the persons, places, and things named in honor of Ann and/or Adoniram Judson, Baptist missionaries who served in Burma 1813-1850.
Compiler
The compiler is Jerry B. Cain who asks for suggestions, corrections and directions at TheJudsonLegacyProject@gmail.com. These entries are the result of an engaging hobby and are not material for a peer-reviewed academic journal. I find satisfaction in doing this research and hope readers find these vignettes to be enlightening, inspiring, entertaining and fun.

The Clossman Images
A proud native of Ohio, the Rev. Dr. Richard Hunter Clossman (1928-2019) taught history at Judson University 1972-1997. One of his hobbies was collecting images that were used in church-related literature of the nineteenth century to tell the Judson story. The visual imagery of these pioneering missionaries was not recorded through pixels and cell phones but with pencils on sketch pads capturing the highs and lows of this couple called to the other side of the globe. Dr. Clossman’s images are in my care and I will eagerly use them in this modern medium just as they were used 200 years ago. We express thanks to Dr. Clossman and his family for entrusting this treasure to The Judson Legacy Project. Attributions and explanations will appear throughout this website.
Compiler’s Statement
My interest in the Judson name began toward the end of the last century when I became president at Judson University in Illinois. Once I encountered the names of Ann and Adoniram Judson I experienced the Yellow Volkswagen syndrome in which people tend to see a particular thing everywhere after noticing it for the first time. Everywhere I looked I saw the name Judson and soon became mesmerized by the abundant notations on this legendary missionary couple. And so, for the past quarter century, I have quietly collected each reference to Ann and Adoniram Judson, important pioneers in the modern missionary movement. This compilation is the result of many years of casually scribbled notes to myself about a missionary couple I have come to admire. If you ask if this compilation is history or trivia or genealogy or story-telling, the answer is yes. The Judsons, have become such an icon that their name is still honored 200 years later. It is a story worth telling and retelling as the compiler of Proverbs reminds us, “a good name is rather to be chosen than great riches.” (Proverbs 22:1)
